We are on a Mission to become the first Neo-Social Security Bank founded by Mothers

Through our platform, we incentivise users to hit our milestones. Milestones include Micro-Savings, Green practises, Nutrition practises, and in the future, Sexual Health and Reproductive Health Educational practises, and track their behaviour which we then use for credit scoring.

Our Milestones and Achievements Over Time

Since our inception, Cariyawallet has made significant strides in supporting African women and children. Our timeline highlights key milestones that reflect our commitment to social security and empowerment.

Milestone 1

While on a technical exercise for the World Food Programme in the refugee and host communities of Uganda, the founders of Cariya wallet noticed something very disturbing. There were too many children under 10 years of age, out of school. A potential loss of a generation. And further research proved a more disturbing trend, many countries in Sub Saharan African were experiencing too much growth in their population under 15 years of age, causing pressure on the education systems.

Milestone 2

Almost a year after leaving the World Food Program me, that image had stuck with the founders, and they decided to do something about it. Using their skills, tools and social capital as innovators, they got to work and created the first version of the idea. The first version asked the question, what if all the mothers in poor households could save 1.3 USD for each child and got 10 USD in match funding. What could that do? Of course, it was going to take another year to get the mathematics modelling right for this to become a reality.

Milestone 3

The first Cariya wallet information kiosk was set up in Jjanyi trading center, Wakiso district, Uganda with our first employee onboard as a community officer. This was a community of micro traders with many women with children. This marked the first design research phase of Cariya wallet. Flyers were printed, posters were made, tear drops were erected to validate the assumption and share the Cariya vision. Within three months 77 women from this trading center and others with 158 children in total were signed up to the Cariya wallet database.

Milestone 4

Cariya wallet took a strategic decision to onboard women in small holder farmer communities in regenerative and climate smart value chains as our first community. Signed an MOU with our first partner. The milestone based underwriting idea product feature was born here where mothers would get credit scoring on specific milestones like their sustainable practices, micro savings behavior and nutrition outcomes of their children in the future

After months of iterations and learnings, Cariya wallet was validated as a crowdfunding platform idea that leverages remittances and employs machine learning for credit scoring and blockchain for fund traceability, by UNICEF Innovation Fund through their GITEX Africa Innovation Challenge.
